Have you ever gone down your own way or pushed something too soon and realized it wasn’t the best decision? My will be done vs. Thy will be done? Maybe you forced something or made it happen quicker than it should have. There may have been some negative consequences of doing that down the line.
On the flip side, have you ever discerned a decision well, waited for the right timing, and reaped the joys and fruitfulness of it? That’s what God’s way embodies. Chances are, however, the timing was unexpected.
When choosing the right spouse, having or growing a family, making a career move, and discerning our vocation, we want to get those things right the first time. That’s why we have to use wisdom, prayer, and discernment to guide our choices and wait for God’s perfect timing to fall into place.
At some points in my life, I thought it was the right time and season for a desire of mine to come to pass, but God knew better. Sometimes I forced His hand and those decisions ended up with consequences that were ultimately painful and less fruitful. I learned that forcing my desires and timing doesn’t work in the long run. It’s best to stay on God’s path, listen for His voice, and make the moves He calls me to make when He calls me to make them. God's best is my best.
Did the timing of when God chose always make sense to me? Not at all. But from His vantage point, it’s probably all part of a divine puzzle of pieces that I can’t see. The truth is that we don’t see the whole picture of our decisions, but God does. That’s why His way and timing is best for us.
This is a struggle to believe and embrace. I know and have been there. Try to look at it this way: God wants what’s best for you. Trust that He’s leading you to exactly that. Has He steered you wrong yet?
